North Patagonia

North Patagonia: Chile’s Remote Wilderness Frontier

Location
North Patagonia encompasses Chile’s Aysén region and southern parts of Los Lagos, stretching from approximately 44°S to 49°S latitude. This vast wilderness lies between the Pacific Ocean’s intricate fjordlands to the west and the Argentine border along the Andes to the east. The region serves as the gateway to Chilean Patagonia, accessible primarily via the legendary Carretera Austral (Route 7), a spectacular road carved through remote terrain only 30 years ago.

Geography and Natural Importance

North Patagonia represents one of the world’s last pristine wilderness areas, dominated by the Northern Patagonian Icefield—the southern hemisphere’s largest ice expanse outside Antarctica, covering 4,000 square kilometers. This remnant of a massive ice sheet from 18,000 years ago continues to shape the dramatic landscape of glacial valleys, fjords, and alpine lakes.
The region’s geography ranges from Pacific fjordlands flanked by ancient temperate rainforests to high Andean peaks and glaciers. This diverse terrain supports unique ecosystems where condors soar overhead and indigenous Mapuche cultural influences remain strong. The area serves as a crucial watershed, with pristine rivers providing abundant freshwater and supporting endemic species in one of the world’s most untouched natural environments.

Main Locations and National Parks

Key destinations: Coyhaique (regional capital and gateway), Puerto Aysén (coastal access), Villa Cerro Castillo (mountain base), and the remote settlements along the Carretera Austral including Cochrane and Puerto Río Tranquilo.

Queulat National Park – Features the striking blue Hanging Glacier (Ventisquero Colgante), native forests, enchanting waterfalls, and alpine lakes accessible via scenic hiking trails
Patagonia National Park – Vast wilderness protecting diverse ecosystems from grasslands to glacial peaks
Laguna San Rafael National Park – Home to the San Rafael Glacier and intricate fjord systems

Road Trip Adventure

The Carretera Austral (Southern Road/Route 7) defines the North Patagonian experience, providing the primary access through this remote wilderness. This legendary route offers adventurous overlanders an incredible journey through varying road surfaces from rocky tracks to fresh asphalt, connecting isolated communities and providing access to some of the world’s most spectacular scenery.
